Staggering three quarters of seasoned drivers would fail driving test

UK Carline, a popular Preston-based provider of quality car and van leasing, believes that more could be done to improve road safety and minimise accidents

One in four drivers would be unable to pass current driving tests if required to take it today, a study has found.

The study was undertaken by RED Driving School and included a skill assessment of qualified motorists, finding that only 12 of the 50 would have the knowledge and skills required to pass the test today. The tests were unofficial and will not result in the volunteers who failed losing their license.

The 38 participants that failed committed an average of 16 minor and 3 major faults.

Other studies have suggested that a growing dependence on sat navs, parking sensors and the like could be driving complacency behind the wheel.

Rob Miles, Director of Motor Trading at Direct Line, said: “Driving aids are becoming increasingly common and when used correctly, can result in a safer, more comfortable driving experience. However, it’s important that drivers don’t rely too heavily on these aids, as it can be to the detriment of both their overall ability and concentration on the road ahead.”

Stephen Glaister, Director of the RAC Foundation, added: “The temptation is to get worried about these figures, yet as cars have improved and gadgets have become more common accident rates have generally been falling. Experience is not everything, but on the road it does count for a great deal. If you look at the statistics it is those who have just passed their test who are most prone to making mistakes.”

Contract hire company UK Carline were also quick to reassure people. A representative for the leasing giant said: “While we appreciate that this study paints a worrying picture on face value, what you have to keep in mind is that there are also a large number of studies out there which tell an all the more comforting story. The story being that the more experienced a driver the less likely they are to be involved in a road traffic accident, where as people who’ve recently passed are a much more likely candidate.

“However, we do agree that more could be done to keep motorists aware of the best driving practices. A refresher course every 5 to 10 years could perhaps help to keep people knowledgeable of the laws and safer behind the steering wheel.”

Before adding that: “Driving a car you feel comfortably in, preferably a relatively recent model with improved technology and driver assistance, can also help you to stay safe.

“At UK Carline we have a great choice of top of the range cars and vans that could not only contribute to keeping you safe but also provide you luxury and comfort.”
