A Round Hog Roasts and Catering Services – a long standing family operated hog Roast Caterer operating across southern England, offers their views on news that the RSPCA is seeking assistance and help to improve free-farrowing standards for UK pigs and other livestock.
As part of the RSPCA’s pledged monitoring of freedom foods, where efforts are constantly being pursued to improve conditions for animals and livestock bred in the UK, they are seeking help from producers nationwide with freedom farrowing systems in an attempt to draft specific requirements and have them put in place for any indoor farrowing accommodation where animals are left loose (free).
From the start of 2014, the RSPCA standards for animal welfare that are all followed by each of the Freedom Food pig farmers and members, stated that farrowing accommodation, that where sows had ample space to turn around freely at all times, was a strict requirement. Eager to provide the best environments for their animals, these free farrowing requirements have been adopted by many pig farmers taking the pledge and farmers are certain that their livestock have positively adapted to even the smallest changes.
There are to be more versions of the RSPCA’s standards to be issued later this year, relating to the space that sows should require in order for them to turn freely and also areas required for increased activity, nursing and excretion and feeding. The welfare standard revisions will also look at what size each extra area should be in order to offer the animals the most comfortable indoor environment.
Eager to move their proposals to a greater audience with other farmers and producers, the RSPCA’s farm animal dept. is keen to gain the help, experience and advice from loose (free) farrowing producers that have already been operating indoor free-farrowing systems in order to assist in shaping the new standards revisions later in 2014.
A Round Hog Roasts and Catering Services’ spokesperson had this to say in response to the news:
“As a company always dedicated to sourcing the best quality produce, from the meats and hogs we roast to the vegetables and salads we use to create a varied selection of accompaniments, knowing that our hogs are reared in humane conditions with adequate space to move and exercise is fantastic.”
“The UK public’s ability to turn a blind eye to where meat comes from is one of the reasons for The RSPCA to feel its necessity to become involved to ensure farmers who want to make a difference can do so following guidelines and rules that are there to ensure the best life possible for the animals.”
