Newly released data has shown that construction output for this April was up by 4.6% on last year, with figures also showing a 1.2% rise on March. Meanwhile, estimates for Q1 growth in construction were revised from 0.6 to 1.5% by the Office for National Statistics. Fresh work in the sector was up 4.9%, largely driven by private housing.

Manufacturing data also painted a positive picture, with figures suggesting that the sector is growing at the fastest rate it has in three years.

Chris Williamson, chief economist at Market, a leading survey data organisation, believes that growth in manufacturing and construction signal the start of strong and sustained growth, stating that:

“A booming construction industry, faster than previously thought economic growth at the start of the year, and hawkish remarks from the Bank of England’s governor Mark Carney point to interest rates starting to rise later this year.”

Howard Archer, chief economist at IHS Global Insight, also highlighted reasons for optimism:

“While construction activity may have come off its recent peak levels, prospects look generally bright across most sectors.

“Extended improved economic activity and increased business confidence should underpin healthy commercial construction activity, while civil engineering activity is robust. Significantly, the Bank of England’s regional agents reported in their June survey of business conditions that ‘growth of construction output was steady and above its long-term average rate, with reports of strong activity starting to spread beyond house building.’”
