Recent rise in learner drivers marks the first change for over 6 years, says leading car hire expert

Fairrent, a UK based, family operated car and van hire specialist, has responded to news that the number of learner drivers taking their test in the UK has risen for the first time since 2008

Official figures released by the DVSA showed that between April 2013 and March of this year, there were 1,477,585 practical tests taken in the UK by learner drivers, an encouraging 2.9% more than numbers for 2012/13. Making the past year the first in over half a decade where there has been a reported rise in the number of individuals taking their driving test, following a steady decline that was fuelled by recession, costs of running a car, fuel prices and most importantly insurance premium prices.

Showing signs that young individuals are beginning to express a more comfortable approach to paying for lessons and eventually purchasing their own vehicle, the new figures are a promising sign, suggesting that the UK is finally regaining its feet again after an extended economic lull.

The report also stated a huge rise in the number of theory tests being undertaken, with a 23.9% increase over the last year. All this goes a long way to how other factors of the motoring industry will benefit, such as vehicle leasing firms, aftermarket car part suppliers and specialist vehicle insurance companies too.

Perhaps more surprisingly, during the 1990’s the UK experienced a decline in birth numbers, resulting in fewer people within the 17-20 year age bracket today. But the resulting rise is great news for businesses within the motoring industry.

Fairrent, a company who operate a policy whereby the minimum age for drivers wishing to hire a car or van is 25, said that the news is positive for the UK economy:

“If the number of learner drivers taking their tests has increased, showing signs of the economy balancing out again, this great news0, not just for us but for all individuals and businesses in the UK.

“Although we stipulate a minimum age for drivers to hire our vehicles, what is important to remember is that not only will we experience a likely boost when drivers reach their mid-20’s but we expect a continual increase in enquiries from eligible drivers right now, as more prospective customers feel the economy improving,” said a representative for the company.
