Louise Sellar, Sales and Marketing Manager of Draks, talks about bedroom storage design

How important is it to spend money on the bedroom? Do buyers expect fitted furniture?

It really all depends on the level of specification. Increasingly, bedroom furniture is regarded as standard now for some housebuilders who no longer wish to

provide plain boxes. They want to differentiate themselves and good, practical, stylish bedroom storage is one way of wowing the pragmatic buyer. Even the volume housebuilders which may have removed bedroom furniture in troubled times are now adding it in again.

Is storage the main consideration when designing a bedroom or is design more important?

The design of the storage is the main consideration - they go together!  If the housebuilder can attract the buyer with designer doors, dividers and walk-in wardrobes, as well as respecting the prospective owners' lifestyles in terms of practical storage solutions, then the selling task is easier. There is nothing more irritating than having a beautiful large master bedroom where there is a) no storage space allowed for in the linear meterage of the room or b) where the beautiful storage will hold only half a person's belongings!  In all probability, two people will live in the room.

At what stage should housebuilders get bedroom manufacturers involved? What benefits can you provide?

If a housebuilder looks at the storage needs of the likely buyer (he will know his target) before even the architect is involved, and talks to the bedroom manufacturers, he will save time and money in the long run as well as providing differentiated bedroom design. If the specification of the bedroom furniture, dividers and walk-ins can be considered and specified at building envelope stage, the job is done and completed with no niggles or rework needed at the finishing stage.
