INTERIOR DESIGNER DEE GIBSON DEFINES THE NEW CONTEMPORARY[image]

Award winning interior designer Dee Gibson who runs Velvet Orange, does not follow the latest interiors trends. Instead her hugely successful formula is to get under the client's skin and to totally understand what makes them happy.

She says a home must be a haven - the client has to live there and enjoy the space. She is driven by what they want but she guides them with her expertise and experience to deliver outstanding results.

Dee Gibson: "I love what I do, I love being creative"

She has just completed a total refurb of a 3 storey townhouse in southwest London and her client is almost jumping off the ceiling she is so happy with the results.

The client says: "I am so happy, when you told me I would love the house I didn't believe it because it's open plan, but you were right, I absolutely love it, you are amazing"

However the whole project was not plain sailing as the process of totally stripping out a house and doing a complete overhaul can be very stressful to the home owner to say the least. Dee had to use all her powers of persuasion to let the downstairs existing layout to stay, because mid-way through, the client panicked and wanted to put a stop on the project as she had lost sight of the vision. Dee managed to keep the client on side whilst she worked on magically creating specific nooks and corners to transform a vast open space into a drop dead gorgeous sanctuary, with different parts drawing you in for different purposes. Now her client's house makeover is the talk of the area!

Dee insists that what she creates must evoke a feel good factor for her clients. Blending old and new, light and dark, rough and smooth, colour and monochrome. It can all work, nothing needs to be regimented. Her work is the "new contemporary". It's not trendy, it's not stuffy: it's all blended.

She says: "My approach to styling is be original, bold and respectful of what has gone before. A few informal photos below demonstrate how mixing up materials and colours can be done successfully to create spaces that will not date. Antique glass and marble mosaics with modern wallpaper in a bathroom and a glass and steel architectural staircase teamed with a deco mirror, elegant wallpaper and bold front door.

It works beautifully to take elements of the past and marry them up with elements of the present and future. We should preserve some tradition and make sure it has its place in what we do - it is the root of beautiful design and happy spaces".
