Aston University has enhanced its long-standing reputation for the engineering sciences by building a new Engineering Academy on its Midlands campus, while a manufacturer with an international track record in the production of construction sealants and waterproofing systems has been selected to surface the entrance ramp and lobby area which will give students access to the teaching spaces.

The new academy has been designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios in Bath, and has been built by Bovis Lend Lease. Prestec was the specialist sub-contractor which installed tremco illbruck's CR360 Repoma Roofing System, along with one of the manufacturer's Compriband Interspan FS110 mechanical movement joints to form the interface between the approach ramp and the lobby, which overlies a vital teaching space.

The Project Architect at Feilden Clegg Bradley, Mr Steve Wilby, comments: "Directly underneath this surface is a specialist engineering studio containing some very valuable 3-D routing equipment, so the waterproofing aspect of the work was as crucial as it comes. We were therefore looking for a ‘belt and braces' system to make sure the installation was totally waterproof, but there were also some challenges in terms of the appearance which Tremco was able to reassure us on.

"While the Tremco MMA Rapid Cure system is very high specification, it is normally used on car park decks, while we were seeking a more aesthetic appearance. tremco illbruck, together with the contractor, Prestec produced a series of sample panels to get the right sort of finish. This used sand in the mix and we were also conscious of not compromising the slip resistance on what is a 1:12 slope."

Tremco CR360, a hybrid waterproofing system based on PUMA technology has been developed by Tremco illbruck and combines the flexibility and crack-bridging performance of PU with the key benefits of MMA resins. It is suitable for renovating most types of existing roof make up, as well as for new-build projects.

The CR360 Rapid Cure Roofing System offers a fast curing treatment which dries in 30 minutes and can be trafficked after an hour, with the entire two/three coat application being completed within one day's work. Importantly there are no hot works to be carried out and most substrates will not need to be primed, thanks to the Tremco CR360 base coat's excellent adhesion characteristics. This seamless membrane is reinforced with Tremco CP581 Fleece and can be used to address the most complex of details around parapets, service penetrations and other features to the roofscape.

Not only can the Tremco CR360 Rapid Cure Roofing System be applied in ambient temperatures of between 0 and 30 degrees Centigrade, but it can tolerate working temperatures from -30 to +90°C, whilst remaining fully flexible and vapour permeable. It is also fire resistant, can withstand extended UV radiation of 1000 MJ/m2,and offers the best possible penetration resistance.

The fitness for use of the CP360/CP930 system has been verified by a leading European testing house against the performance standards of ETAG-005, and is supported by Tremco's comprehensive technical service.

As well as the remedial treatment of existing roof coverings such as asphalt or built-up systems and existing single-ply membranes, the Tremco CR360 Rapid Cure Roofing System is also suitable for green roof and inverted applications as well as being capable of application direct to suitable insulation in warm roof constructions such as this.

In the case of the Aston University Engineering Academy, a Tremco CP630 Vapour Control layer was bonded to the concrete using PU010 Foam Adhesive and tapered insulation laid before the CR360/C930 system was laid to complete a warm roof type build up. The ramp was surfaced using the Tremco MMA Flexible system and separated from the lobby area by FS110 construction joint.
