174 Singapore companies are fined for health and safety violations in one month period

A leading management and property consultancy company, AA Projects responds to the alarming news of lack of health and safety amongst Singapore’s worksites.

Carried out by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) the extensive month-long Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) enforcement operation revealed that from 250 worksites, 174 companies had actions taken against them, totting up a total of 353 workplace safety violations and breaches of code that could seriously place workers at risk of grave accidents. A total of 60 of the worksites found to be in breach of regulations were fined up to $13,000 or approximately £6,180 with every inspection during the month long period.

The inspections were focused on high risk sectors including construction and marine industries, providing essential evidence that much has to be done to improve conditions to ensure better safety for workers. A total of four of those sites presented significant risks and had immediate Stop-Work Orders or SWO’s issued for what was described as ‘severe WSH lapses’.

A statement from the Director of MOM’s Occupational Safety and Health Inspectorate, Chan Yew Kwong, regarding the importance of these inspections said: “We urge contractors to take these processes seriously, and also ensure that control measures are implemented to mitigate WSH risks. Falls from heights are still the leading cause of workplace deaths, so this is an area we will continue to focus on. We will not hesitate to take action against errant employers.”

As a company at the frontline of their industry, they react regularly to news, reports, studies and research relevant to all management and consultancy areas they operate within. A company spokesperson believes the actions of organisations such as MOM are a fundamental necessity to ensure better safety for workers and the public:

“As shocking as these figures seem, we must remember that they are only taken from an investigation that lasted only a month. Offering specialised workplace and site inspections across all industries we understand the importance of maintaining the correct levels of health and safety.

“The report mentioned the improvement of many worksites, visited at random and we believe that this supervisory process is a valid requirement for Singapore’s health and safety directive and organisations such as MOM.”
