Mention Blighty and you will probably mention rain in the same sentence. Given high levels of rainfall in recent years, building professionalshave the challengeof dealing with damp substrates and their potential to jeopardise the long-term performance of floorcoverings.
Fortunately for the industry, leading manufacturers like tremco illbruck have developed well-proven product portfolios including both moisture vapour suppressants and high quality surface damp-proof membranes.
The risks that damp poses to people's health are well-known but specifiers also need to be mindful of the environmental impact of the products they choose. This is why tremco illbruck hasinvestedin a new, water-based moisture vapour suppressant.
ES600 is BREEAM-accredited as well as ECI-compliant and produces very low levels of VOCs while being ideally suited to suppressing residual moisture in cementitious sub-floors: including power-floated concrete and sand/cement screeds.
It can be used where RH readings are up to 95% making it ideal for refurbishment situations where a DPM already exists. Significantly, ES600 has been formulated to facilitate the rapid installation of new floorcoverings in situations such as social housing where tenants need to have access restored to kitchens or communal corridors. The fast-track combination of ES600 and TREMCO SX500 Rapid Drying Smoothing Compound is also proving popular in the retail sector and for hotels.
As a single component membrane, there is no mixing required while 5kg of ES600 moisture vapour suppressant will cover an area of 16 square metres in two coats. Impressively, it can be walked on within one hour and the laying of the floorcovering can commence.
Also, because it is a single component product, any fluid remaining can be resealed and saved for another job, offering further cost benefits to the contractor while cutting waste adds to ES600's impressive environmental credentials.
As an internationally-respected manufacturer of construction products, tremco illbruck has been a leader in the supply of DPMs for decades being the first to introduce an epoxy treatment. In fact, its ES100 One Coat Universal DPM continues to dominate in situations where RH readings rise to 97%.
ES100 can combat rising dampness in concrete floors and provides a guaranteed surface damp proof membrane which is pinhole resistant ensuring the successful installation of floor finishes where moisture readings are above 75%. It can be specified for floors with a moisture content of 75-97% RH (99.9% theoretical) by applying the mixed components at the correct thickness.
ES100 is supplied asatwo-part treatment that is straightforward to mix and easy to apply using a trowel and roller. Its epoxy-based composition includes wetting agents and penetrants to aid adhesion while overlapping platelets present a further barrier to moisture vapour movement.
Again, where speed is crucial, contractors could make use of TREMCO ES200 Fastrak Universal which dries in half the time of conventional epoxy DPMs. ES200 is also EC1-compliant with very low emissions.
The UK remains a wet temperate climate area where even projects using modern methods of construction take many weeks or months to dry out adequately. Therefore, clients wanting to guarantee the success of their flooring installations should engage with a manufacturer able to offer a full range of well-proven, user-friendly and sustainable damp proof treatments.
