Fireplace
and stove experts Stonewoods respond to news that fracking; the process of
extracting natural gas through hydraulic fracturing is now backed by the UK
majority.
Following
research carried out by Populous, on behalf of trade body UK Onshore Oil and
Gas (UKOOG), a survey showed that 57% of the UK public who took part in a
survey were in favour of fracking as a method of generating a sustainable
source of natural gas from shale production.
Although a
controversial process due to the huge amounts of water that hydraulic
fracturing or ‘fracking’ requires, which has to be transported to the location
at a significant environmental cost, not to mention the concerns over escaping
carcinogenic chemicals including mercury, lead, radium and ethanol that can
easily pollute potable water supplies, groundwater and rivers, the report found
that fracking is gaining more popularity.
The chief
executive of UKOOG, Ken Cronin, issued a statement at the time of revealing the
results and said: "More than four out of five of us heat our homes with
gas, and Britain's shale resource gives us the opportunity to become less
dependent on foreign energy supplies, create tens of thousands of jobs and
support our manufacturing industries.” Adding that:
"Shale gas and renewables are complementary, and our survey
confirms that the public would like to see a balanced mix that includes both
sources of energy."
However, the findings have been disputed by many, with environmental
group Greenpeace saying that the survey is not a true reflection of the general
attitude of the UK public.
London-based fireplace and stove specialists Stonewoods regularly
reacts to relevant industry news, surveys and research. A company spokesperson said:
“Natural gas extraction in the UK is a topic that is always of interest
to us as a leading supplier of gas stoves and fireplaces. On one hand, we’re
often frustrated by the rising cost of gas provided by the big energy
companies, while on the other we tend to shun certain methods of energy
extraction if there is an environmental impact. It’s a fine line to tread and
one that needs to be considered carefully, particularly for those in the
vicinity of proposed fracking sites.
“We would be all for fracking if it could help to alleviate fuel
poverty, allowing people to more easily afford to heat their homes. But we’re
also realistic and recognise the need to consider the effects and wherever
possible push for more renewable energy sources.
“If like others you’re finding energy prices as they are now too high
and you want to spend less on monthly bills then we can provide you with any
number of energy efficient fireplaces.”
