Shrink
wrapping solutions provider ADPAK responds to news that South African paper and
plastics packaging group Mpact are to venture into plastic recycling sector to
ease landfill waste
Mpact is
currently one of the largest plastic and paper packaging businesses in Southern
Africa, with 31 sites across South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Mozambique,
employing over 3,700 people. They are listed as having the leading market
position across southern Africa within the corrugated packaging, recovered
paper collection, PET preforms, polystyrene trays, plastic refuse and storage
bins and recycled based carton and containerboard.
Mpact are an
environmentally conscious company that will mark their entry into recycling
plastics with their R350m PET plant, due to be constructed in the second half
of 2015 in Wadeville, Germiston. The new development is expected to generate
over 21,000 tons of new raw materials from an estimated 29,000 tons of
polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, the ones used as milk and juice
containers in supermarkets. Mpact will save a huge amount of this recyclable
refuse from landfill sites across South Africa.
Mpact chief
executive, Bruce Strong said of the new plant: “The new investment will help
create about 1,000 jobs directly and indirectly, in addition to a saving of
about 180,000m3 of landfill space each year – the equivalent of 75 Olympic-size
swimming pools.”
In addition,
investment analyst Dirk van Vlaanderen of Kagiso Asset Management said the R350m
plant would be ‘positive for the plastics division and should help secure
supply and reduce polymer costs’.
Lancashire
based leaders in shrink wrapping machines, Adpak Machinery Systems Ltd,
regularly react to industry news, especially environmentally targeted
developments. A company spokesperson believes that the move is a step in the
right director:
“It is
brilliant to hear of Mpact’s foray into the plastic recycling sector in South
Africa. The new PET recycling plant will definitely help the amount of viably
recyclable waste that actually ends up in landfill sites where it can take
considerable lengths of time to decompose naturally.
“As a
company that manufacturers shrink wrap machines that use plastics within their
operation, environmental issues are always a high priority of ADPAK’s. We go to
great lengths to maintain ecological and environmentally sound operating
procedures within our day to day operations.”
