Targeting animal diseases with new veterinary network is a ‘welcomed breakthrough’, says Hog Boss

Specialist hog roast catering company Liverpool Hog Boss has responded to news that a ‘UK Veterinary Vaccinology Network’ has been created to assist in the fight against animal diseases.

Funded by BBSRC at a cost of £300,000 per year for the next five years, the VVN, or Veterinary Vaccinology Network, is a multidisciplinary collection of Vaccinology experts who’ll be tasked with tackling serious diseases that are known to affect livestock within the UK.

A spokesperson for BBSRC said:

“Vaccines represent one of the most cost effective ways of preventing and eradicating diseases and they are an important tool in the armoury against infectious diseases.

“With approximately 60% of animal diseases having the potential to cause human infections, these vaccines protect public health as well as enhancing animal welfare and sustainably improving livestock production to meet growing food demands.”

Based in the Northwest, hog roast caterer Liverpool Hog Boss often comment on relevant industry news. A company spokesperson believes that a move to further tackle animal diseases is needed to ensure safety for livestock and the general public, commenting:

“It’s great to hear that ongoing efforts are being made to fight diseases, not simply to lessen the chances of outbreaks such as foot and mouth disease that affect farming communities immensely but also to ensure a better, healthier life for pigs, cattle, poultry and other animals.

“This is a welcomed progression from vaccination campaigns that have addressed and eradicated a number of diseases such as rinderpest in livestock, reducing the usage of drugs and antibiotics.

“Improving the welfare of animals and researching better ways to combat disease will benefit everyone from farmers to consumers. It will certainly fill our clients with confidence when we’re cooking up fresh juicy pigs that we’ve sourced from local farmers.”

Dr. Bryan Charleston, Veterinary Vaccinology Network coordinator and head of the Livestock Viral Diseases programme at The Pirbright Institute, said:

"There is huge potential to improve animal welfare, human health, and the economic performance of the UK livestock industries by developing new vaccines for widespread infectious diseases caused by parasites, bacteria and viruses. “
