Fall in finished pig prices 'may raise concern for breeders', says Manchester Hog King
Fall in finished pig prices 'may raise concern for breeders', says Manchester Hog King

Hog roast experts Manchester Hog King has reacted to news that finished pig prices are continuing to fall despite increased demand.

Recently released figures based on reports from BPEX have shown that finishing pig prices for farmers and breeders has continued to decline. Although not showing huge losses, the falling prices are significant cause for attention, meaning more work from the pig communities if higher profits are to be achieved.

BPEX reported the following: “The GB SPP reached another new low at 159.18p per kg. This was 0.46p lower than for the week ending August 2, 2014, as subdued demand continued to add pressure to pig quotations.”

With pig weights being heavier than a year ago, there is sound evidence that the supply in the market has experienced a boost, which could be the reason for falling prices.

Despite the low level of feed prices and an increased focus on cost efficient porcine housing practices, the industry seems to have taken a knock, with figures down significantly on those recorded at the beginning of the year.

Manchester Hog King, a Manchester-based spit roast caterer, regularly responds to relevant news, reports and studies. A company spokesperson believes pig farmers need supporting in times of price fluctuations:

“Although falling finished prices actually benefits end buyers, including ourselves, we work very closely and can empathise with pig farmers. There have been numerous changes that have occurred this year that have seen greater pig weights achieved, as well as substantial investment and research into sustainability and environmental action. We believe that this lull, although significant, will be short lived.”

As a leading provider of spit roast catering, Manchester Hog Roast works closely with farmers in the North West. A representative said:

“As one of the few caterers in Manchester providing whole pigs and other meats, we enjoy relationships with many of the area’s most respected independent farmers. Our food is straight from farm to plate which is why it tastes as amazing as it does.”
