Concerns over depression levels as ‘two-thirds’ of suffering Britons
receive no treatment
Leading hypnotherapist, counsellor and
psychotherapist Suzanne Thomas responds to news that a lack of help available
for people with depression in the UK sees two in three go without treatment
In light of
the tragic circumstances that lead to one of the world’s most loved comedians
taking his own life after battling depression for decades, Suzanne Thomas, one
of the UK’s most recognised and respected hypnotherapists, has reacted to figures
suggesting that two-thirds of people in the UK with depression are not
receiving the help they need.
The shock
over the death of Robin Williams, who at 63 took his own life, recently brought
home the seriousness of depression, with tributes flooding in from devastated
fans across the world who struggled to come to terms with his passing. With
many people often wrongly associating depression with financial issues, it
would seem as though this much loved celebrity had little reason to take his
own life.
However,
depression goes far deeper than that. Affecting millions across the world, it
is one of the most damaging mental health conditions a person can experience. Numerous
experts have gone public over the last week, arguing that if a similarly high
number of cancer patients were going without treatment that there would be
nationwide outrage. Speaking from Kings College in London, Professor Simon
Wessely said:
“People are
still routinely waiting for – well, we don't really know, but certainly more
than 18 weeks, possibly up to two years, for their treatment and that is routine
in some parts of the country. Some children aren't getting any treatment at all
– literally none. That's what's happening. So although we have the aspiration,
the gap is now so big and yet there is no more money."
London-based
hypnotherapist, counsellor and psychiatrist Suzanne Thomas keeps a very close
ear to news occurring in her industry. Speaking in response to the recent news
that so many individual depression sufferers are not receiving assistance or
treatment, she said:
“It is a
disgrace that so many people who genuinely require treatment are completely
overlooked, with the government turning a blind eye to the issue rather than
investing in much needed treatment and support.
“To hear
that even children, who are far more susceptible to emotional trauma, are going
untreated is a grave concern for all associated, from myself to health
officials within the government who have the power to make changes.”
