The Broadway Collection News for September

It's Back to School time for children and parents in New York, but travelers to the city can still enjoy the endless selection of free and low cost events this month.

In September, Manhattan will host the annual Mercedes-Benz Fashion week which displays designers from around the world and features their upcoming spring collections. Other Manhattan events of note include the fifth annual Coca-Cola sponsored "Generations in Jazz Festival" which will delight Jazz-lovers with its selection of renowned performers spanning three generations of musical magic. Theater fanatics can also indulge in an off- off- Broadway festival during the month of September. The Dream Up Festival is a collection of world and American premiere theater works, adaptations of classics, and workshop productions. Tickets are per show, and range between $15-$20 USD. Now through Sunday, September 28^thvisit the borough to be entranced by ten intriguing acts including flame throwers, sword swallowers, escape artists and contortionists.

Speaking of side shows, a revival ofSide Show(link to:http://sideshowbroadway.com/) is coming to Broadway this fall as a member of The Broadway Collection with previews beginning Tuesday, October 28 and an opening night set for November 17. The show will grace the Broadway stage for the first time since 1996 after undergoing revisions and welcoming new musical numbers. This dark comedy highlights the stories of Daisy and Violet Hilton, conjoined twins whose act toured the vaudeville circuit to popular acclaim in the 1930's.

In other Broadway news, international stars Alan Cummings and Emma Stone will star opposite of one another as "Emcee" and "Sally Bowles" in the revival of Cabaret. The performance (link to:http://www.mtv.com/news/1904759/emma-stone-cabaret-broadway-2/) will mark Stone's Broadway debut as she steps into the shoes currently filled by film and stage actress, Michelle Williams.

Similarly, the Tony-Award winning best revival of a musical - Pippin has opened its arms to a new cast member. John Dossett of Newsies now headlines the role of "Charles". He took over the role two days after Newsies dimmed its lights and drew the curtains August 24^th, completing a successful, extended Broadway run.

Another cast addition is Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award-winning actress Judy Kaye. Kaye will star as the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella beginning September 12th. She'll perform alongside former Nickelodeon Star, turned talk-show host and recording artist, Keke Palmer. Palmer is also making her debut, and making history (link to:http://www.vanityfair.com/vf-hollywood/keke-palmer-cinderella-broadway) as the first African American Cinderella on Broadway.

Last but not least, we'd like to share with you the closing of another Broadway Collection show. Motown the Musical is taking a break from Broadway beginning this January, with plans to play in London then re-open in America in July of 2016 at another Broadway venue.
