Dorset-based Sports-Injury practitioner mentors athlete training in Canada as he prepares to fight for a place in Ironman World Championships 2016
Distance is not an issue for former naval officer Richard Elkington who, while working temporarily in Ottawa, Canada, is training for the Ironman World Championships and being mentored by experienced Dorset-based Sports-Injury consultant Suzanne Norton from Back2Back Complementary Healthcare.www.back2backhealthcare.com
Richard spent over 20 years in the Navy but in 2001 snapped an Achilles tendon. The road to fitness after injury led to Richard developing a passion for Triathlon but when he started to have back problems he sought help from Suzanne and her recently created Sports Injury Clinic in Sturminster Newton.
Richard says, "I moved to Dorset in 2010 and originally went to Suzanne as I had back problems and she had been recommended as a skilled chiropractor." He then became aware of Suzanne's unique approach in working with sport injuries providing treatment and Deep Massage as well as advice.
Richard says, "Suzanne's approach is rare in a practitioner. The holistic way in which Suzanne works and her knowledge of how to manage training is pretty unique as it includes everything from treatment for problems and discomfort arising from the training toadvice on exercise, fitness and nutrition, for example recommending supplements to prevent injury. Her approach helps me sustain high levels of training and is the only way to succeed in endurance training - total support throughout wherever I am, be it Dorset or Canada.
"When I was attending her clinic in Dorset, Suzanne was also able to provide advice on techniques for the disciplines involved in long distance triathlon, from bicycle fit positions to the swimming and running techniques used and explain any errors occurring that can cause an injury, then translate these to the changes required to prevent re-injury.
"Endurance training is all about avoiding injury whilst training, that's the whole focus. If you can't avoid injury you can't be competitive, for me it is simple, I could not have done it without Suzanne's help and now I am in Canada that help continues with emails so that she can continue mentoring me with her excellent advice."
Suzanne says, "At Back2Back Healthcare we are taking a huge interest in Richard and his determination to qualify for the 2016 Ironman World Championships. Canada offers some fantastic facilities for training, but Richard is still keen to follow my advice that is supporting him throughout his endurance training. When training for these types of events which use so many different muscle groups, it is really important to pay attention to what can seem like minor adjustments in positioning, but make a huge difference in preventing injury."
