Gaia helps to create a warm, inviting church
Gaia Climate Solutions was chosen as the supplier of the hydronic (wet) underfloor heating system which was installed in the newly renovated St. Barnabas Church in Cambridge. It is a heating system installed into a grooved insulation for the entire church floor. The final floor finish is a 20mm thick oak-faced engineered board fixed to battens, between which is the insulation and underfloor heating pipework.
The project aimed to transform the internal space of the church, restore the Old School, now renamed as the St. Barnabas Centre, which is located next to the church and to landscape the outdoor areas. There were new gas fired boilers installed in a new plant room formed in the new first floor area over the coffee servery and store. As well as providing the heat source for the hydronic underfloor heating to the main church and entrance, the boilers also supplied a new heating system to the offices, toilets and first floor meeting room over the offices.
Ivan Wilmore, Project Manager and a worshipping member of St Barnabas Church comments, "The church is a large building to heat and an air space heating system had been installed about 25 years ago when the church had undergone an earlier refurbishment, but it was noisy and inefficient. The church is Victorian and it was preferred to keep the walls as clean and plain as possible, therefore a heating system using radiators was not considered to be suitable.
A hydronic underfloor heating system was specified and Gaia was selected by one of our church members, who is a mechanical and electrical engineer; a quotation from Gaia was received to assist during the planning and budget stage of the project. Gaia was later recommended to the company who carried out the mechanical and plumbing installations."
In addition to the system itself, Gaia offers a complete turnkey solution by designing, supplying and installing both the insulation and heating system.
Gaia also offers the well-known DEVI electric underfloor system which is a popular choice for renovations and thin floor installations. For further information on Gaia, please call 0845 434 9488 or visit www.gaia.co.uk.
