October’s Tax Disc changes will be more ‘environmentally friendly’ for the DVLA, says UK Carline

Contract hire and car leasing experts UK Carline has responded to news of the new tax disc changes coming into force from October 2014

The UK vehicle tax disc, a compulsory requirement for any vehicle being operated on Britain’s roads since 1921, is to undergo a radical revision from October this year when it is to be phased out.

From the 1st October 2014 the vehicle road fund licence or tax disc will be replaced with a digital record that will be accessed through the DVLA website. Police and other enforcement personnel will be able to check that a vehicle is taxed through their existing ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) systems, with the database alerting officers to any vehicle that is not taxed accordingly.

The proposed overhaul has already been met with mixed reactions from UK residents, politicians and environmentalists. Although it will make paying car tax easier and the entire system cheaper to operate, its primary focus is to attempt to eliminate instances of drivers cheating the system by either not purchasing road tax or using counterfeit tax discs. Advice notes usually provided alongside the normal paper tax disc will also no longer be issued, making the incoming changes more environmentally friendly and less wasteful.

Preston-based car leasing company UK Carline reacts regularly to industry related news announcements.  A company spokesperson believes that the scrapping of paper road tax discs and advice notes is a positive, stating:

“With the advancement of the internet it seems only natural for the DVLA to increase efficiency and reduce their carbon footprint.

“Helping to reduce the number of cars operating without road tax and those with fake tax discs means that this system should be more cost effective, while also taking the battle to counterfeiters. We’re looking forward to next month’s rollout and are making preparations for all our vehicles to ensure a smooth transition.”
