Ink cartridge supplier Ink Worldwide reacts
to Fujifilm’s launch of environmentally friendly UV printer ink
There has
been lots of calls over the years for ink manufacturers to develop products
that are more sustainable and safer to the environment, with much focus being
placed on developing more economical means of its use in printer technology and
lessening the side effects of waste and waste management.
However, it
has taken the work of one main manufacturer in particular, Fujifilm, to come up
with what is the best alternative to date – a special ultraviolet ink or UV
ink, which is reported to be ‘healthy for the human body’ when compared to
regular solvent based printer inks. The Japanese technology giants, whose foray
into printing and ink screening is as huge as their photography and electrical device
sectors, commercially launched their new Vybrant F1600 printer and UV ink at
the Viscom Paris 2014 event held between the 09th – 11th
sept, after an earlier preview at FESPA Digital a few months ago.
The use of
regular solvent ink in commercial applications has now been banned in many
European countries due to the high level of volatile properties within them.
The harmful compounds released by solvent based inks can prove extremely
damaging to workers operating in relevant environments, such as print works and
in the production of posters and banners. Even with scrutinised safety measures
in place, many need to receive medical examinations every three to four months,
especially in developing countries such as India.
Discussing
the launch of the new ink and printer, Mike Battersby, the large format
marketing manager at Fujifilm Speciality Ink Systems, commented: "Fujifilm's
FUZE technology effectively integrates the unique benefits of UV chemistry with
an eco-solvent carrier. The durability, flexibility and high gloss finish
produced by the Vybrant F1600 will help companies take their production
performance to the next level."
Cheshire-based
ink retailers Ink Worldwide react regularly to relevant news and reports within
their industry. A company spokesperson believes that Fujifilm’s developments are
a crucial step for the industry:
“As a global
brand name known across the world, admittedly more so for camera and
photographic lens products, Fujifilm’s advancements in developing a safer UV
ink and specialist printer for commercial and soon to be domestic use is
brilliant.
“Being a
leading supplier of ink cartridges, toner products and a wide range of
additional products, we believe the move is a bold and innovative one on behalf
of Fujifilm and one that will surely encourage other manufacturers to follow in
