Oregon Timber Frame Limited has become one of the first timber frame specialists to incorporate Norbord's new SterlingOSB Fire Solutions range in its products.
The company, with factories in Selkirk in the Scottish Borders and Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, is one of the country's leading independent timber frame specialists, supplying and erecting structural timber frames (both open and/or insulated) to several top developers throughout the UK.
One of the company's latest projects was on a Mansell Homes development in Southampton. Here, SterlingOSB Fire Solutions were utilised for fire mitigation (during construction) measures in a number of properties; for both sheathing and floor decking.
SterlingOSB is one of the most widely-used board products in today's construction projects and is the first choice for many leading timber frame manufacturers.
Its strength, durability and low cost make it the ideal material for traditional timber frame panels and Structural Insulated Panels, while its ‘green' credentials enhance modern low-energy building designs.
The SterlingOSB Fire Solutions range was launched earlier this year in response tonew Structural Timber Association (STA) guidance for reducing fire spread in large timber frame buildings during the construction phase.
The guidance was produced following a number of highly publicised incidents involving fires breaking out in large timber frame buildings (i.e. with a floor area in excess of 600m2) before the permanent fire resistant finishes were in place.
The Fire Solutions range comprises three products designed to meet the three generic categories of timber frame set out in the STA guidance. These are:
Category A: Standard open panel timber frame system;
Category B: Reduced fire spread timber frame;
Category C: Fire spread resistant timber frame
Consequently, Sterling OSB FS-300 satisfies Category A and is made from 9mm SterlingOSB/3 with an intumescent coating on both sides. Sterling OSB FS-MgO satisfies Category B and combines Sterling OSB/3 9mm board with a 3mm layer of magnesium oxide board bonded to one side. Sterling OSB FS-MgO 150 is aimed at Category C and has MgO board on one side and an intumescent coating on the other.
Mike Buick, market development manager with Norbord Europe,commented: "These products represent a significant development and place Norbord in a strong position to capture market share in what we expect to be strong recovery and growth of the timber frame sector".
