Suppliers of
fabric, cloth and haberdashery goods Remnant House has commented on the success
of the recent Yorkshire Yarndale Festival and says passion for knitting has
returned to the UK one again.
Yorkshire’s
woollen industry was once a world renowned pioneering industry, as the one wool
hub that produced wool of the highest pedigree, being prolific to the wool
trade simply doesn’t give Yorkshire the justice it deserves. For many years the
fine skill and absolute craftsmanship that went into creating the perfect Yorkshire
worsted wool for example gave it an impeccable reputation of being the most
opulent woven cloth from anywhere in the world.
However,
wool eventually took a decline due to new synthetic wools being produced and
other factors affecting the trade. However, over the last few years, knitting
has once more become hugely fashionable, not just amongst friends but
mainstream, in design and fashion. Changes in values, shopping habits and
hobbies have placed wool as a leading material once more and times haven’t been
this good for the industry for some time.
Speaking
from the Yarndale Festival, where around 7000 visitors strolled around the
Skipton Auction Mart and the ‘Yarn Walk’ over the 27th and 28th
Sept, one of the organisers, Emma Sandoe revealed herself that she’d ‘always
been passionate about knitting and crocheting.’
She added: “Over
the last few years or so my fellow knit and natter friends and I had started to
realise that it wasn’t just us who were mad for all things woolly – there are a
huge amount of people out there who share our passion. By the same token
however, there aren’t many festivals celebrating wool and its associated crafts
within the UK, so we began to realise that there was a gap in the market that
we could fill - and Skipton with its long standing links to the woollen
industry, felt like the perfect place to start such a festival.”
Harrogate-based
haberdashers and fabric suppliers Remnant House react to relevant news and
events happening across the UK on a regular basis. The company spokesperson was
keen to celebrate the return of wool as a material was once again in vogue and
believes that events like this only serve to further increase the buzz and
popularity of knitting and craftwork within Britain:
“The amazing
exhibition at this year’s Yarndale Festival simply reflects how popular
knitting, crocheting and the art of haberdashery have become once again. As a
Yorkshire-based fabric and haberdashery business, we felt a close connection to
this year’s celebrations. Seeing such a terrific turnout just goes to prove
that as hobbies go, we will only see an increase in popularity yet to come.”
