Beat winter blues the natural way
Amphora Aromatics' top tips to boosting your health this winter

It's easy to be become run down and vulnerable to colds and flu during the winter months. While the challenges of balancing the budget and meeting family commitments can make the run up to Christmas one of the most stressful times of the year. However, a quick, inexpensive way to boost your immune system, revitalise your energy stores and provide a sense of general well-being is by using essential oils.

With this in mind, Amphora Aromatics, one of the UK's largest suppliers of pure essential oils and aromatherapy products has come up with the following tips to show how you can quickly and effectively beat the winter blues the natural way.

1. Clear up unsightly cold sores

Seasonal stresses and common colds can trigger cold sores. Try this remedy to clear up any outbreaks as quickly as possible. Mix together 1 drop Bergamot, 1 drop Lemon, 1 drop Tea Tree, 2 drops Geranium or Rose Geranium into 5ml of a carrier oil, such as Sweet Almond or Grapeseed. Apply frequently onto cold sore with a fresh cotton wool bud each time.

2. Soothe a sore throat or laryngitis

Tea Tree is a natural anti-viral. Eucalyptus provides a natural boost to the immune system. Inhale both in this anti-bacterial and antiseptic blend to nurse a sore throat back to health. Mix 2 drops Tea Tree, 1 drop Eucalyptus, 1 drop Lemon, 1 drop Lavender into a bowl full of boiling water. Allow the water to cool for 2-3 minutes and then position your head 25-30cm above the water bowl. Place a towel over your head so steam travels directly towards your nose and breathe deeply for a minute. Or, simply add the oils to a tissue and then inhale regularly.

3. Beat a stress-related headache

If Christmas preparations are getting you down, simply swish 5 to 6 drops of Lavender and Peppermint essential oils into cold water and dip in a flannel to create an instant cold compress to press on your head to relieve tension and clear a troubled mind.

4. Eaten too much Christmas dinner? Here's the solution....

If you are feeling bloated and suffering from indigestion after indulging too much on Christmas Day this recipe could be just the ticket. Create a massage blend of the following essential oils: 3 drops Fennel; 1 drop Peppermint; 1 drop Ginger in a carrier oil or cream. Place a few drops on your hands, rub them together and then start to massage your abdominal area working in a clockwise motion - the same direction as the digestive tract.

5. Ease away a stiff neck and shoulder tension

Create a hot compress or massage blend as an instant answer to upper body tension. Mix together 2 drops Ginger, 1 drop Geranium, 1 drop Clary Sage and 1 drop Lemongrass in warm water and use a flannel to create a soothing compress to place on stiff and achy muscles. For a massage blend, mix the essential oils with a carrier oil or cream and massage into neck and shoulders until the blend is absorbed.

Comments Eugény Couture, in-house Aromatherapist at Amphora Aromatics: " Essential oils and aromatherapy in general can help to relieve and improve both our general health and specific conditions. They can also play a huge part in helping us relax and unwind during the hectic Christmas period. Just a few drops of Lavender or Chamomile oil in a bath or room fragrancer can help with insomnia and to sooth nervous tension, leading to a more balanced state of mind and an ability to cope better."
