NHS bid to cut energy bills with £50m funding is plausible says Gradwood
NHS bid to cut energy bills with £50m funding is plausible says Gradwood

Industrial heating, ventilation, air conditioning and smoke ventilation systems provider Gradwood Ltd respond to news £50m is to be invested in NHS energy saving measures

The news comes as the NHS is preparing to incorporate radical new measures to drastically reduce its high energy bills by up to 20%. Currently standing at a huge £750million annually, the improvements and proposed energy saving measures could see the cost of the NHS’s energy bills dropping by £150million, estimated the Green Investment Bank (GIB).

So what improvements could we see put in place to save, in effect, a fifth of the NHS’s current energy spend? Well in a proposal outlined by the GIB, such measures as systems that will provide power and heat at the same time, the use of low energy LED lighting across the board, improved ventilation and heating systems and the introduction of biomass boilers could look set to reduce costs significantly and of course greenhouse gases by just under a third.

Nottingham’s ‘Queen’s Medical Centre’ has been announced as the first project to receive funding from the £50m, where a chunk of the investment at approximately £7.5million will be used in the scheme to upgrade many features of the centre, such as combined heat and power systems, upgrades to the existing steam boilers and low energy lights.

Savings made over the course of the next 15 years will be fed back into the scheme and an estimated £2.8m will be saved each year as a result of the improvements. The chief executive of the GIB, Shaun Kingsbury, said: "As one of the country's most energy intensive organisations, the NHS could save up to £150 million a year by putting in place energy efficiency measures. These measures to be incorporated at Queen’s Medical Centre alone are expected to save 7,400 tonnes of carbon dioxide, equivalent to taking 3,300 cars off the road, a fabulous achievement and effective use of funding.”

Stockport-based Gradwood Ltd presents a vast range of ventilation, heating and air conditioning solutions for an array of industries. Regularly reacting to relevant news and reports, Gradwood Ltd maintains a valued presence as a leading authority within their field. A company spokesperson believes that improving energy systems and making the proposed changes is a viable and effective way to reduce costs:

“As experts in heating and ventilation systems, we are confident that the proposed figures that the GIB have announced are attainable, allowing the NHS to save up to a fifth on the price of their annual energy costs. Saving money and reducing carbon emissions are two things we take seriously and efficient system changes will see a vast improvement, a move we do support.”
