Briggs Equipment's charity dinner raises £42,000

A charity dinner hosted and sponsored by materials handling services specialist Briggs Equipment has raised £42,000 in aid of the Royal Logistic Corps' football development programme and Help for Heroes, the charity that supports injured Armed Forces personnel.

Over 160 people attended the event, which was held at the Headquarters Officers' Mess of the Royal Logistic Corps (RLC) at Deepcut Barracks in Camberley. Thirty-three thousand pounds was raised on the night, and Briggs Equipment then pledged to round up the total to £42,000.

Brigadier Richard Parkinson said: "We are overwhelmed by the generosity of those who attended this year's Briggs dinner, not least the company itself, and on behalf of all those involved in football within the RLC, who will benefit enormously, be that at Regimental or Corps level, Regular or Reserves, Male or Female, I would like to pass on our heartfelt thanks.

"The contribution made by our Defence Industry partners confirms the very close and genuine relationship we have and reinforces the level of support those working in this industry gives to the UK's Armed Forces. That means a great deal to all serving personnel."

"We are also delighted that significant funds will go to Help for Heroes, which provides invaluable support to service personnel who have suffered life-changing injuries in the course of their duties."

Guests at the dinner enjoyed the Sundown Ceremony, a piper from the Queens' Own Ghurkha Logistic Regiment, a military band and the Corps of Drums from the Royal Logistic Corps. There was also an inspirational talk by Andy Grant, an ex-Royal Marine Commando severely wounded by an improvised explosive device (IED) in Afghanistan who, due to complications resulting from his injuries, had his right leg amputated. Andy won two gold medals at the Invictus Games and highlighted how, having fought his way back to fitness by getting involved in adaptive sports, he has received assistance from Help for Heroes to start a new career as a motivational speaker.

Throughits Defence Logistic Support (DLS) division, which provides global materials handling equipment supply and support to the Ministry of Defence,Briggs Equipment has been a supporter of the RLC's sports programmesince 1998. The company's extensive rugby sponsorship has helped to instil the importance of sport in developing soldiers' skills, particularly in promoting teamwork and building resilience.

Now, the RLC willdevelop its football initiative, using its share of the£42,000 tofund additional equipment, new strips, coaching qualifications, pre-season training camps and the development of two annual regimental competitions.

The £42,000 raised by the Briggs Equipment charity dinner will be divided equally between the Royal Logistic Corps and Help for Heroes.
