Local optometrist urges people to avoid taking risks with their eyes on bonfire night

As many will be preparing to join in bonfire night festivities, Sheffield-based optometrist Alex Gage is highlighting the need to take safety precautions when using and watching fireworks.

According to the Royal College of Optometrists, 10 people lose their sight each year as a result of careless behaviour around fireworks with a further 300 estimated firework-related eye injuries.

Alex Gage, who owns two practices in Crosspool and Woodseats, said: "Wherever possible, attend an organised event, and most importantly, take care to avoid eye damage.

"We are advising people to take extra care with sparklers, which are often given to children but can cause injuries to the eyes, hands and face.

"Sparklers should not be given to children under the age of five and a container of cold water should be nearby to put the sparkler in as soon as it goes out."

He also advised people to follow the Firework Safety Code which includes buying fireworks that meet British Standards from a reputable buyer - look out for the BS 7114 on the box - following instructions on each firework and lighting them at arm's length.

For more information or to book an appointment at the Crosspool practice, please contact Alex Gage at 48 Sandygate Road, Crosspool on 0114 266 7066 or at 857 Chesterfield Road, Woodseats on 0114 274 8582.
