FUE Hair Clinics, a
popular British company specialising in follicular unit extraction, have
commented on a study linking baldness with aggressive prostate cancer
Middle aged and balding? You could be prone susceptible to
prostate cancer, according to a study published by the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
The US-conducted study looked at men between 55 and 74 years
of age. The men, all 39,000 of them, filled out a questionnaire regarding their
hair at age 45 while waiting for a cancer screening trial. The results found
that those who admitted to have had frontal and modest thinning of the crown
were on average 40 percent more likely than others to fall foul of an aggressive
type of prostate cancer.
However, the study found no risk factor between many who
reported different hair loss patterns, which is likely to lead to even more
research on the study. Also, the report was based on recollections and
subjective opinion of the individuals studied.
For the time being, many scientists speculate that higher
testosterone – found in both those who suffer prostate cancer and lose their
hair – could be the link.
The study is not the first to find a link between hair loss
and cancer or other serious illnesses. It’s well known that male baldness could
indicate heart risk, for example.
But FUE Hair Clinics, one of the UK’s top providers of hair
loss transplants, says those losing their hair needn’t panic.
“There is a lot of research out there showing a connection
between cancer and hair loss but it’s worth remembering that the risk isn’t all
that great. In fact, in many ways,
hair loss could work for the better if it encourages more men to visit the
doctors and get themselves checked in the wake of losing hair,” explained a
representative for the company. “One of the big factors in hair loss is stress.
If you’re constantly stressed, worried and anxious, your hair is more likely to
begin thinning. Not just that, but you’re also more likely to fall ill with
something serious. Your peace of mind is therefore essential for a happy and
healthy life.”
According to FUE Hair Clinics, people should visit their
local GP if they’re losing hair and worried about cancer. Additionally, they say
that a hair transplant could lift the weight off their shoulders, giving them
more confidence, stopping them from worrying and in turn potentially reducing
risk of illness or disease.
“It’s a vicious cycle, unfortunately. That’s why we
recommend people come and visit us if they’re in a constant state of anxiety
and stress, because we can not only have your hair looking great again but also
help you to feel good about yourself.”
