Manchester Hog King backs global
efforts for World Food Day

Manchester Hog King has thrown their support behind the United Nations World Food Day campaign
There are 800 million people in the world without
fundamental access to healthy food, with independent family farmers purported
to playing an even larger and more important role in what has been billed a
‘global war on hunger’, that’s according to the United Nations, who last
Thursday affirmed the growing significance of family farms.
Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General, remarked on World Food
Day: “Family farmers are key to unlocking global progress. They run the vast
majority of farms in the world. They preserve natural resources and
agro-biodiversity. They are the cornerstone of inclusive and sustainable
agriculture and food systems.”
This year’s World Food Day coincides with the International
Year of Family Farming and focuses primarily on smallholder farms and their
role in shaping a better world for tomorrow. Statistics show that around the
world there are well over 500 million smallholder farmers, playing not only a
major role in trade but also health, “providing food security and eradicating
poverty in the attainment of the internationally agreed development goals,
including the Millennium Development Goals.”
Ban Ki-moon highlighted the impact of a continued effort
against hunger, remarking that in the space of the last 10 years the number of
hungry people has fallen by 100 million – a real achievement given global
popular increased massively over the same period. On top of that, a total of 63
countries are said to have cut in half the number of citizens suffering from
undernourishment.
“More than 800 million people do not have enough healthy,
nutritious food to lead active lives. One in three young children is
malnourished. A world free from poverty and hunger where all people have
realised their right to adequate food, is central to the future we want,”
explained the Secretary-General.
A spokesman for Manchester Hog King said: “It’s easy to
forget that around 70 percent of food production around the world is dependent
on family farms, especially when looking at it from a western perspective where
intensive commercial farming is much more prominent.
“It’s therefore important that every effort is taken to
support family farmers, ensuring that as few people as possible are faced with
malnourishment and food poverty.”
