comments on study showing that coffee benefits liver
The National Cancer Institute has recently announced new
research showing that the more coffee you drink the lower your risk of abnormal
liver enzymes.
The study looked at 27,000 participants, measuring their
consumption and enzyme levels over a 24 hour period, to better gauge the health
of their liver. Surprisingly to some, the conclusion was that not only is the
popular beverage beneficial for your liver but it also doesn’t matter how much
caffeine is consumed.
Those who consumed three or more cups on a daily basis had
significantly reduced enzyme levels in blood, a known indication of liver
health.
Dr. Xiao, a lead researcher for the study, said: “Prior
research found that drinking coffee may have a possible protective effect on
the liver. However, the evidence is not clear if that benefit may extend to
decaffeinated coffee.
“Our findings link total and decaffeinated coffee intake to
lower liver enzyme levels. These data suggest that ingredients in coffee, other
than caffeine, may promote liver health. Further studies are needed to identify
these components.”
David Bernstein, herpetology division chief at the North
Shore University Hospital, added: “There have been several studies which have
intimated that drinking coffee may be protective to the liver and even prevent
the development of liver cancer.”
Fresco Gourmet Coffee, a British supplier who regularly
react to news and research, were excited by the news, believing that the
research will do wonders to encourage more people to up their consumption.
A spokeswoman for the company said: “We all know that it
tastes fantastic but what we don’t hear enough of is the many health benefits.
Every couple of months it seems like there’s a new study out which explains
that coffee is good for our health and that’s something that not everybody is
aware of.
“At Fresco we have so many great options available, from
flavoured Halloween blends to Italian or instant coffee, and we’re always keen
to tell our customers about some of the unknown benefits of our favourite
drink.”
