Company comments on predicted jump in number of late holiday-goers
One in three people are making plans to take a last-minute
holiday at home or abroad, a study has shown, with figures revealing that 1/3
of us have booked or are planning to book a holiday in October.
Better still, the British tourism and hospitality sectors
are set to benefit too because many of those surveyed said that while they
can’t afford to take a trip abroad, most would visit UK destinations, with 40%
saying that they would at least spend a day at a British seaside.
It’s said that the number of British bookings is the direct
consequence of the recent Indian summer – the Met Office claims the beginning
of September was the driest since 1960 – we’ve had, with many opting to support
domestic tourism as opposed to spending more money on a holiday outside of the
UK. Experts believe something to the tune of several million pounds will be
added to the industry.
A spokeswoman for the Association of British Travel Agents,
Gillian Edwards, explained how interest is substantially higher than is usual
at this time of the year, with many encouraged by milder weather.
“Many of our members are reporting strong interest for short
domestic breaks this autumn, no doubt boosted by the warm September we’ve had
and the promise of an extended Indian Summer,” explained Gillian. “Web searches
for destinations overseas that offer good weather at this time of year, such as
Tenerife, Grand Canaria and Mallorca, are also up.”
But the Association of British Travel Agents isn’t the only
one reporting a swell in interest.
The Beautiful House Company, provider of luxury houses for
hire, also reported that over the course of the last month the number of people
making bookings has been unusually high.
A spokesman for the company said: “Compared to previous
years, the number of people making last minute bookings at the moment is
definitely on the high side. We received lots of interest in September and
that’s continued throughout October so far.
“Not only are there plenty of Brits out there making last
minute holiday plans but many of them are shunning cheap accommodation abroad
in favour of a more lavish experience in the United Kingdom, be it in England,
Scotland or Wales.”
