Cornish Restaurants Get StreetSmart

Restaurants throughout Cornwall are preparing to get StreetSmart this winter, in an annual drive to raise funds for three local charities.

StreetSmartis a national campaign that aims to raise money each year for the vulnerable via a voluntary £1 donation added to restaurant bills during November and December.

As all administration costs are paid by national StreetSmart sponsor Deutsche Bank, 100% of the money raised goes directly to the charities.

Money raised in each county stays to benefit the charities in that county - therefore, every pound donated in Cornwall will benefit St Petroc's Society, Cornwall Women's Refuge Trust and the Cornish branches of Foodbank.

Helen Mulhern, Managing Director of Eventy - Marketing & PR who are coordinating the Cornwall contingency again this year is pleased to be on board once more, saying:

"We have been running StreetSmart in Cornwall for several years and are delighted that so many restaurants want to take part for 2014. We hope that even more will come forward before November 1st when the campaign begins. Raising awareness for the charities involved and supporting the restaurants is key to making this year even more successful in providing vital funds to help the vulnerable in Cornwall."

Helen continued, "As well as raising funds for these vital charities, StreetSmart also results in excellent PR returns for the restaurants thanks to the local media.  It's completely free for them to run and we would love to talk to more restaurants that would like to get involved on 01326 376273".

Restaurants to already sign up in the region include Nathan Outlaw's at St. Enodoc Hotel, in Rock; Archie Browns, in Truro and Penzance; Carbis Bay Hotel's Beach Club Restaurant, in Carbis Bay; The Old School Bar & Kitchen, in Mount Hawke; The Square, Kota and Kota Kai, in Porthleven; Alba, in St. Ives; The Halsetown Inn, in Halsetown; No. 4 Peterville, in St. Agnes and The Victoria Inn, in Perranuthnoe.

The Halsetown Inn have supported StreetSmart for a number of years:

"This is our third winter at The Halsetown Inn and the third time we are proud to support Streetsmart. It gives our team and customers the chance to make a connection with and contribution to the community", said Marie Dixon.

Martine Derry at Old School Bar & Kitchen at Mount Hawke, who are also new this year, says:

"Everyone at the Old School Bar & Kitchen is delighted to be involved in StreetSmart 2014. It's such a simple process, but we know what a difference it can make for homeless people across the UK. Homelessness is all around us, and as the weather starts to turn colder, we should all spare a thought for those who are sleeping rough - often through no fault of their own. The Old School Bar & Kitchen is proud to support such a great charity initiative."

Stephen Baker, owner of Carbis Bay Hotel & Estate is pleased to be joining the campaign this year saying:

"We are very proud to be supporting StreetSmart this year through the Carbis Bay Beach Club Restaurant on the beach. We are pleased to be part of a campaign that raises money for charities that support the homeless in Cornwall and are looking forward to raising the profile of their work with our diners. Agreeing to £1 being added to your bill is such a simple way to make a huge difference. We hope that everyone who eats with us in November and December will want to be on board."

StreetSmartraised £610,000 across the UK last year with a raft of celebrity supporters including Gordon Ramsay who said: "StreetSmart has become part of Christmas for us. It's everyone's chance to do the right thing at the right time with only the gentlest nudge."

FURTHER INFO:

St Petroc's Societyoffers housing and support for those homeless and single in our area. Supported houses give much-needed breathing space to some of the most vulnerable people in Cornwall. StreetSmart funds have been used to support Cold Weather Provision, giving the homeless a place to rest and sleep whenever the temperature drops below zero.

Cornwall Women's Refuge Trustprovides a safe and supportive environment for women and children who have escaped domestic abuse. They have also recently opened the South West's first refuge for male victims of domestic abuse. Previously, StreetSmart funds have been used to refurbish bedrooms and run support groups to help with building self-esteem and other important life skills.

Foodbankhas branches throughout the county and delivers food to local people in crisis. They rely on food donated by members of the public, which is then distributed through a network of dedicated volunteers. Additionally, there are always advisors on hand to give information about benefits, rights and other sources of support.
