A major provider of
car leasing, UK Carline, believes further tests could prove beneficial for
drivers
More than half of drivers in the UK agree that a new
motorway driving test should be rolled out, a survey has found.
The survey, conducted by Flexed, asked drivers about their
attitudes towards driving tests, discovering that 52% are in support of motorway
test, for both learners and those who already have a license.
Perhaps more impressively, young people were found to be
more supportive of the notion, with 70% of 17-24 year old drivers responding
that they believe the move is required. The findings were released in the wake
of official figures detailing a rise in the number of serious accidents. Last
year, serious injuries and deaths were up 14% on 2012.
Women were also shown to be more supportive of the
introduction of a driving test for motorways. 61% of females compared with 41%
of men believe it should become a requirement.
“There has been a consensus amongst motorists for a long
time that drivers should have to pass a test to drive on the motorway. This is
not something which applies to solely young drivers, as the latest statistics
suggest they are just as likely to be involved in a motorway accident as any
other driver,” said Alex Wignall of Flexed.
Continuing, “There are too many drivers of all ages who are
inexperienced on motorways and are not familiar with the important differences
which separate it from other types of driving. Our survey shows that there is
support out there for the idea that all drivers, whether they have only just
passed their test or whether they have been driving for years, should now have
to pass a specific test before they are allowed to drive on the motorway.”
Noted provider of car leasing deals in the UK, UK Carline,
also weighed in, saying that further testing would likely have a positive
effect on road traffic accident figures.
“With the majority of drivers now supporting a hypothetical
extra test for motorways, it will be interesting to see how the government
choose to proceed,” said a spokesman for Preston-based UK Carline. “Such a test
would not only help new drivers to feel more comfortable when using motorways
but could also have a real impact where reducing serious injury and death is
concerned. With that in mind, it’s understandable that many believe separate
motorway tests would be valuable.”
