Seating specialist cites
collaboration as key to reablement
As Occupational Therapy Week approaches in the UK, a
specialist seating provider is highlighting the important role occupational therapists
play in the reablement process, as it looks to build further links with the
industry.
Repose Furniture already collaborates with occupational therapists
in many areas of the UK but is calling for greater collaboration in order to
further develop its products for the home market.
“The specialist
support provided by occupational therapists is integral to helping an
individual build strength, confidence, and regain independence. Their role
relies on understanding the difficulties that a medical condition may impose
while finding solutions and these sentiments are echoed throughout the ethos
and design of every Repose chair,” said Repose Managing Director Lisa
Wardley.
Repose Furniture is no stranger to collaboration and as well
as working together with a network of UK distributors, the company is
collaborating with popular television personality Dr Hilary Jones, who has
become the firm’s expert healthcare advisor. He is working with Repose to help
them reach out to the home market and provide inside advice and assistance to
the company’s ongoing market strategy. And the television personality is also
keen to help the company build links with occupational therapists, recognising
the vital role that they both play in patient care.
“Occupational therapists are key when assessing patients, ensuring
reablement is personalised to the individual’s needs. In turn this maintains
function and independence, helping people to continue to lead fulfilling lives,”
he explained.
“Extended collaboration
here would hold a number of benefits for end users. Occupational therapists
work directly with patients; and so by igniting partnerships between them and
specialist service providers, such as Repose, we can ensure we deliverthe best possible product, which supports
the needs of the individual and aids reablement.”
Along with their recent collaboration with Dr Hilary Jones,
Repose recently partnered with Coventry
University Health Design & Technology Institute (HDTI), in order to
continue the development of its products with a view to making the lives of
therapists, healthcare professionals, occupational therapists, and home users
easier.
As part of the academic research, eight industry
professionals from across the healthcare sector carried out a thorough analysis
on a number of Repose’s specialist chairs. Among the professionals analysing
the products were four physiotherapists, two occupational therapists, and two
nurses, each of whom had backgrounds with patients of various ages,
disabilities, and illnesses.
Managing Director Lisa Wardley said: “In order to continue to provide innovative and supportive seating
solutions, we need to embrace the skills held by a broad range of healthcare
professionals and specialists. By working together we can offer the best
support and advice to help provide sustainable reablement- both in health and
social environments.”
Repose has a long-standing presence within the health and
care sectors, and recently launched its new Melrose chair at NAIDEX exhibition.
Part of its posture positive range, the Melrose has been specifically
engineered to meet the needs of semi and non ambulant users, and provides
adaptable support for neurological and postural conditions. It will allow occupational
therapists to offer tailored pressure relief solutions to patients.
Repose Furniture is exhibiting at this year’s Occupational
Therapy Show at Birmingham’s NEC where Dr Hilary Jones will also open the
two-day event with an opening speech further highlighting the benefits of
collaborative working.
