Fabric sales surge as Halloween approaches

Remnant House believes more people are taking to making their own costumes this year

More people are choosing to create their own unique Halloween costumes and home decorations, according to Remnant House – one of the UK’s top sellers of fabrics and sewing equipment.

Remnant House, based in Harrogate, says that sales for their Halloween collection have been coming in thick and fast this last month, with more people than ever choosing to make something unique at home, leading to unusually high September sales.

A spokeswoman for the company said:  “The amount of people coming to our shop or getting online and buying Halloween themed fabrics from our website is unbelievable. We’ve just had one of the best Septembers in a while and October has been equally positive to date. There’s been a real spike in interest this year. We’re not sure whether it’s because Halloween is becoming a bigger occasion in the UK or because of recent sewing-based TV shows, or both, but what we do know is that there are lots of people out there who’ve chosen to make their own costumes.”

But traditionally scary costumes aren’t necessarily what people are after this year. Less sinister characters and designs are also in-demand.

“It’s not just scary zombies, monsters and the like which are popular. Many of our customers have been buying otherwise normal fabrics to make more modern and child-friendly costumes, such as Red Riding Hood, Jerry the Minion from Despicable Me, Shaun the Sheep and more. Many adults are also choosing to create characters from popular TV shows and movies.

“There’s an endless sea of possibilities when you make your own costume and you can really impress your friends with something truly original and creative. If you’re willing to put in a little effort, doing it yourself is far more rewarding than going down to the supermarket and buying something that lots of other people will be wearing.”

Halloween fabrics aren’t the only thing the Remnant House are known for. They also have a large and growing selection of Christmas products and are bracing themselves for a festive surge in buyers.

“With the Halloween sale window practically closed, we’re now focusing on adding even more Christmas fabrics to our shop!”
