PRESS RELEASE

TO: News Desk

FROM: Cantref - Brecon's Biggest Adventure

DATE: 10thNovember 2014

Is it a Shetland? Is it a donkey? No, it's a shonkey!

Cantref - Brecon's Biggest Adventurehas become home to a very unusual animal.

Families visiting the Welsh adventure park will be able to meet a cross between a donkey and a horse - a shonkey.

Gwen Evans, owner of Cantref - Brecon's Biggest Adventure explains:

"She is a strange mix of Shetland pony and donkey, looking from some angles like a horse and other angles like a donkey.  She is bigger than a Shetland but smaller than a donkey.  Her ears are bigger than a horse's but smaller than a donkey's.  Her mane looks like a donkey's but her tail looks like a horse's.  The funniest thing is she attempts to bray like a donkey sounding more like a neigh in the middle before finishing more like a donkey again."

The family run business offered to rehome the shonkey following an unplanned visit from a donkey to a friend's Shetland mare; although the owners of both the Shetland and the donkey fell in love with the foal, the cost of feed bills over the winter were prohibitive.

Cantref are delighted with their new addition to the adventure farm and the shonkey is already proving to be extremely popular with visitors - living in the Big Animal Barn with Chloe the Shetland pony who has kept her company since she arrived.

Gwen added: "Chloe and the shonkey get on like a house on fire. She is a favourite with the children visitingCantref, as she is so friendly and loves attention. We are really passionate about teaching and introducing children and adults to our animals - especially ones they might not have seen before. We have regular animal encounters here at the park which give visitors the chance to learn about feeding and handling animals as well as some of the skills a working farm needs."

Cantref will be a running a competition during December for their customers to name the new shonkey with a prize of a family ticket for 4 people.

Throughout December visitors will be able to see her in the Live Animal Nativity Scene in the Big Animal Barn; she will also be making special guest appearances in the Mr Ev's Christmas Stage Show, along with Chloe who is a seasoned professional in the Christmas Show.

Cantref - Brecon's Biggest Adventureis a family run adventure park and working farm open all year round, offering games, soft play, activities, rides and animal encounters for all the family - just to mention a few of the things available.

Regular live shows take place throughout the day, enabling hands-on experiences of feeding and handling some of the farm's favourite animals.

Future events at Cantref for 2014 include a Santa's grotto and Winter Wonderland as well as a Children's New Year's Eve Party with a special countdown at 12 noon.
