Hotel sector in South Africa celebrates double-digit growth – NFS SA comments

NFS SA, a leading provider of commercial software solutions, have responded to recently released figures showing that the hotel sector in South Africa has seen double-digit RevPAR growth.

The growth is the result of more foreign tourists choosing South Africa as a holiday destination, and according to reports, Cape Town is the most popular city in the country in terms of new hotel investment, with reports showing that at present there are 11 projects set to start, 8 that are in advance and 3 that are feasible. These projects will open in coming years and are thought to represent ZAR 3.5bn investment and are expected to add more than 2,000 jobs to the economy.

Experts believe one of the starting points of the current increasing in foreign hotel investments came when Marriott acquired the Protea Hotel Group earlier this year. Another key to surging investment has been said to be the currently positive exchange rate with Europe.

To date, Johannesburg and the Western Cape have attracted the majority of financial investment, with most interest coming from the Middle East, China and the US.

Already, Pam Golding Lodges and Guesthouses, one of the most recognisable names in the sector, has played a role in facilitating a total of 56 direct investment transactions from foreign companies, valued at almost 0.5bn ZAR. The transactions are also thought to have added upwards of 500 new employees to the market.

NFS SA, a provider of tourism software in the country, often share their thoughts on industry news and research. They believe tourism has an incredibly bright future and that more and more foreign investors are starting to sit up and take notice of the economic opportunities available.

A spokesman for the company said: “There has been huge growth in hospitality in recent years and it’s something that many of us have witnessed first-hand. Direct investment is currently doing a lot of the sector, helping to create new jobs and really creating a snowball effect. It’s a great time to work in hospitality in South Africa.

“Another key is the rapid advancement of technology in the industry in South Africa. Hoteliers here have been quick to adapt, embracing new technologies which give them the tools to deliver the very best service, which hasn’t gone unnoticed by tourists to the country.”
