Wayoh reservoir undergoing renovation from Hardy Services
Wayoh reservoir undergoing renovation from Hardy Services

Hardy Services, one of Lancashire’s leading engineering companies, is currently working on the first stage of a £160,000 renovation programme for Wayoh and four other reservoirs.

The contract for the project was awarded by United Utilities and will see Hardy Services start by renovating Wayoh reservoir, located near Bolton, over the next month. After that, four other reservoirs in the North West will have their safety improved.

Presently, the work being undertaken centres on cleaning the reservoir spillway. To do this, Hardy Services are getting rid of vegetation and growth, cleaning the stonework with a jet-wash and pressure-grouting the stone sets. The result is that the spillway will be secured and protected from any further potential decline.

A second Hardy Services team has also started work at Quarry Hill, Cumbria. Their engineers are then set to begin work on Pennington, Horlock and Borrans reservoirs, also in Cumbria.

Work at Wayoh will be completed by Christmas while the project in its entirety will be finished come the middle of 2015.

United Utilities senior manager, Andrew Baron, said that the work is essential in bettering the safety of the reservoir. He explained: “By clearing and pressure-pointing the overflow channels, the reservoirs will be fit to tackle the challenges we all face from an ever-changing climate, in particular flash floods. It will also drastically improve the aesthetics of the reservoirs.”

Hardy Services has worked with United Utilities previously, providing expertise on a number of fronts.

Hardy Services managing director, Paul Hardy, said: “Each project has its own challenges, from reservoir flood contingencies, crayfish, ecological and environmental issues, the weather or just the simple fact that we can’t stop the water course. This contract gives us a fantastic base to push forward and grow the businesses.

With expertise in Utilities, Mechanical, Electrical and Civil, Hardy Services is one of the North West’s most accomplished engineering companies. They have over 35 years’ experience and have worked with a number of top utilities companies, including United Utilities, Yorkshire Water, Scottish Power, Scottish Water and Thames Water.
