Pride & Joy rejuvenates period property with fresh and neutral palette

Following a chimney fire that caused damage to Liz and David Guilford's family home on the Derbyshire / Leicestershire borders, Pride & Joy's attractive paint palette came to the rescue and transformed every room.
What appealed to you most about this property?
We moved here in July 2009, having looked for our ‘forever home' up and down the country including the Peak District and Scotland, for what felt like ages. David and I and our two children, Hannah, 7, and William, 4, and our Labrador, Stella, had been living in a semi-detached property in a village but eventually discovered this four-bedroom home just two miles away. We were instantly attracted to it because of the space, the period character of the home - a converted mill built in the 1600s - and the fact that it was secluded with six acres of land.
How did you go about stamping your mark on your new home?
The house needed a lot of work and hadn't been updated for years, but we wanted to live there for a while until we had decided exactly what structural and decorative changes we could make. So we painted the home throughout and changed the carpets, to help lift the interior and make it feel like home.
In March 2012, however, due to a build-up of soot and carbon, the large inglenook fireplace in the living room caused a chimney fire, resulting in substantial damage to the roof and chimney. This meant we had to move out for a while and we decided to live in a mobile home on the grounds and take the opportunity to renovate and invest in our home to finally create the ‘forever home' we had been looking for. Following the renovation we selected our Pride & Joy palette which really helped to create the look and feel we were hoping for.
Why did you choose the palette you did?
As we have an older house we wanted to respect its heritage so we used a lot of warm and cosy colours in the way of sophisticated greys, taupes and pastels. We love the finish the Pride & Joy paint gives and the variety of paint colours on offer.
We have oak floors and predominantly oak and pine furniture throughout so we wanted neutral colours that enhance a sense of calm. In the living room we chose a soft brown tone that lifts the light and contrasts well with the deep brown leather sofas and compliments the feature wall. In the hall and on the landing we chose a similarly soothing grey/lilac shade and the colour is reflected in the stripy stair runner. We chose similarly neutral shades for two of the bedrooms, with a more colourful selection for the childrens' rooms to complement their statement wallpaper. In the master bathroom, with its freestanding roll-top bath, the paint gives a really fresh feel. For the kitchen we chose a light grey shade that looks good against the cream units.
Did your experience of Pride & Joy meet your expectations?
Yes, the company is very responsive and helpful. We initially chose Pride & Joy as we knew of its parent company, Teknos, and its great reputation.
We have been more than happy with the results. The paint has been easy to order and delivered swiftly. On a couple of occasions when we needed to order more, it turned up the next day. Even the decorator was impressed by the coverage it gives and said he'd be using it in his own home.
Would you recommend Pride & Joy to your friends?
Yes, definitely. We're waiting for planning permission as we want to build an annexe for my parents and my Mum has already looked at the Pride & Joy brochure and picked out which colours she wants where!
