Van leasing company, UK Vanline, have commented on the news
that the Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) are set to discontinue the
production of paper licenses for driving in 2015.
The DVLA are informing motorists in advance of the 2015 date
about the changes to licensing, as they scrap the paper counterpart to the
photo card driving license. For those with a counterpart currently, the paper
may be destroyed as it will serve no purpose going forward, other than for
changing addresses with the DVLA, but this can also be done online.
They have revealed that a driver with a current photo card
license doesn’t have to do anything, nor will it affect those with an old style
paper driving license issued before 1998. Instead, any updates to home
addresses or license renewals, will see a photo card issued out instead of a
new paper license.
The change won’t see any entitlements, penalty points or
statuses removed, so the change acts as a transition rather than a fresh start.
All information will be stored online, which will be beneficial to
organisations and businesses which need to check the counterpart license.
This online service is due to launch later this year,
setting up early to avoid an information overload to the online servers, which
was seen in October of this year when the paper tax disc was dropped. The
information will only be accessible to those with the right to see it, so
information will remain private.
UK Vanline often comment on industry news, and a spokesperson
for the company said, ‘These changes are a sign of the times, as paper formats
become defunct in place of online services. While the initial transition from
physical to digital might be a struggle for some, it will help streamline the
checking process for businesses. Van drivers should see benefits as checking
will be a quicker experience without the need to call the DVLA to confirm
information, when it’s all on a database. Anything that’ll benefit driving is a
positive in our books.’
