Airgun Laws Set To Change in Scotland, Just Air Guns Responds

UK airgun company, Just Airguns, has commented on the new Scottish government proposals, which intends to have every airgun owner require a license to own and use an airgun, in aims to reduce airgun misuse.

Under the new Scottish government plans, everyone who wants to own an airgun will need to provide a legitimate reason on why they need one, otherwise they won’t be issued a license. With an estimated 500,000 air weapons in Scotland, the effects could reach far and wide.

The new laws will also affect any British citizens crossing the borders In Scotland with an airgun, in hopes to keep gun circulation controlled and safer for citizens in the country. It will take time for everyone to obtain a license, but the government believe the new rules will be beneficial to airgun users across Scotland, as only approved users can own and use the guns for sport, and interests,

David Penn, part of the British Shooting Sports Council, argued that these new laws wouldn’t affect airgun crimes. He said, ‘One has to remember that there is widespread continuing use of air weapons in pony clubs, boy scouts, cadet units as well as the individual use of them. We never hear about this. Why? Because nothing is going wrong. There is a huge amount of use of air weapons and very, very little misuse in comparison. Most other countries do not see the need to license air weapons.’

Just Airguns often comment on industry news, and a spokesperson for the company said, ‘While having a license system in place can help the government keep track of who owns a gun, the implications for those who go unlicensed may end up being too severe. As David Penn stated, crime rates involving airguns are incredibly low, and most who use them, use them with care and for a specific purpose.

We do feel that the license will help normalise the use of airguns however, and may even remove some of the stigma they’ve created over the years due to a very rare case of misuse. Airguns are dangerous, but with the correct handling, they can be incredibly useful, especially for hunting.  We look forward to delivering airgun accessories to Scotland for licensed users when the new laws pass.’
