RAF memorials receive backing from Westminster – Antique Bronze comments

Antique Bronze, a leading provider of bronze and statue restoration, have responded to news that national memorials are to receive £400,000 in support from the government as part of a wider effort to honour RAF heroes.

£150,000 of the LIBOR Fund is to be given to the International Bomber Command Centre (IBBC), it was outlined in the Autumn Statement last week, comprising part of a £400,000 boost for war memorials honouring those who helped to defeat the Nazis.

The project is based just outside of Lincoln and is designed as a focus point of remembrance for Bomber Command. The first phase of work is anticipated to begin in January of next year. Completion of phase one is due to be completed by June 2015, lining up with the WWII 70th anniversary.

Project Director of IBCC, Nicky Barr, believes the funding will ensure stories aren’t lost to future generations: “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded this much needed funding. This IBCC is a truly exciting project that will not only properly honour all of those in Bomber Command, and ensure their stories are not lost, but will also promote a spirit of reconciliation through relating the stories of people across Europe who were affected by Bomber Command. We can’t thank The Chancellor enough for awarding us this vitally needed funding.”

A Treasury source said that supporting charitable organisations is an honour: “We are delighted to be able to support such worthy organisations honouring and continuing to support our RAF heroes.

“We hope that this funding will help support our airmen and airwomen, while also giving future generations the chance to learn about the huge contributions and sacrifices they have made for our country.”

Antique Bronze, a specialist in memorial restoration, often share their thoughts on related industry news. They believe that support is needed to ensure such monuments can be viewed by future generations.

An Antique Bronze representative said: “There are many thousands of monuments in the UK which have unfortunately not been given the care and attention they deserve and so it’s great to see that the government are committed to doing even more to help by supporting the likes of the IBBC to commemorate the heroes of the RAF who helped to defeat the Nazis.

“As an accredited member of the Institute of Conservation (ICON), we’ve helped to restore thousands of monuments and we know just how crucial maintenance and restoration is, especially when it comes to some of the older bronze statues.”
