UWrap, a UK provider of shrink wrapping machines, have
responded to news that the Welsh government has backed the Love Food Hate Waste
campaign.
The campaign, created to reduce food waste and help families
to save money, was developed by WRAP, a charity focused on sustainable
resources, was first established in 2007.
This particular two month pilot programme by Love Food Hate
Waste was carried out by the Co-operative store in Porthcawl and received in
excess of 500 pledges from customers to modify their food use and storage
approach, potentially saving them up to £700 each year.
Love Food Hate Waste is now set to carry out new research
into the behaviour, attitudes and awareness of consumers in regards to food
packaging and waste. The findings of these studies will be released in 2015.
Minister for natural resources for the Welsh government,
Carl Sargeant, explained: “The message is clear; keeping food fresher for
longer saves money and helps to reduce waste. There are environmental and
financial benefits to making the most of the food that we buy, and cutting
unnecessary waste, in the run up to Christmas.”
Head of Love Food Hate Waste, Emma Marsh, said: “We are
delighted The Co-operative Food agreed to support this pilot. Packaging and
storage are key factors in helping us all to reduce the £12.5 billion worth of
good food that goes to waste in UK homes every year. It is great to see the
shoppers in Porthcawl embrace this idea and share their pledges with us. We
want everyone to be able to reduce food waste, help the environment and save
money and this campaign has done just that!”
UWrap, one of the UK’s top providers of shrink wrapping
machines and equipment, often share their thoughts on industry related news.
They believe government support will go a long way towards encouraging
awareness of packaging.
A representative for UWrap said: “It’s essential that we
raise awareness on how best to handle and dispose of food packaging, both from
an economical and an environmental point of view, and the same is true with
food waste. The two are intrinsically linked and while packaging has come a
long way and helps us to keep food in pristine condition for longer, it can
sometimes be confusing to know how to best get rid of the many types of
packaging that there is.
“We help hundreds of companies in the food and drink sector
to better preserve their foods and as leading provider of shrink wrap solutions
we fully support what Love Food Hate Waste are trying to achieve.”
