New Reflex Campaign Put In Place to Improve Flexible Packaging Recyclability, Adpak Machinery Systems LTD Comment

UK based shrink wrap machine company, Adpak Machinery Systems LTD, have commented on the new Reflex campaign, set up by a number of companies to improve flexible packaging recyclability.

A two year project called ‘Reflex’ has been set up by Axio Consulting in Manchester, with the likes of Nestle UK, Dow Chemical Company, Tomra Sorting and Interflex Group. Other companies are set to join the project, including packaging manufacturers, polymer producers, and waste management firms.

Director of the project, Roger Morton said, ‘ This project aims to remove the barriers preventing flexible packaging being recycled, thus enabling recyclers such as Axion and SITA to change the supply chain, create a circular economy in flexible packaging and divert it from landfills.’

Research will take place to move packaging away from being dumped in a landfill, with a focus on plastic bags, frozen food bags and confectionary wrappers being the main focus initially, as they make up approximately a third of UK packaging, all of which ends up in a landfill.

The current research has involved a study on reprocessing materials into a recyclable plastic pellet, with tests expected to be carried out over the two year project.

Often commenting on industry news, a spokesperson for Adpak Machinery Systems LTD said, ‘The new Reflex campaign should provide a great future for packaging, as more types become easily recyclable. Products need to be packaged to avoid damage, make them easily moved or for maintaining the freshness of the product, and the improvements in how recyclable the packaging is will help the environment immensely.

Shrink Wrap can already be recycled, which makes it a light weight and environmentally friendly form of packaging, and is ideal or wrapping produce, cases and crates to name just a few of the uses available with the versatile material. Any further improvement to the recyclability of shrink wrap is welcome however, but for now our machines will help wrap up a wide range of products with environmental benefits in mind.
