Process Cranes from Street Crane Help Tiger Trailers Ramp-Up Production

High growth commercial vehicle body builder, Tiger Trailers, operating from a brand new factory in Cheshire, are using overhead cranes from Street Crane Company for efficient material handling and to boost productivity. A fleet of four cranes from the High Peak crane maker will be in use when an additional five tonne crane is installed alongside two three tonne and one five tonne Street overhead cranes.

Tiger is a new name in the commercial vehicle market that was started in April 2014 by brothers John and Steven Cartwright, both industry veterans with decades of experience. Since opening for business, the company has won orders from leading national logistics and retail companies for their trailer vans, curtain side trailers, double deck trailers and bespoke rigid bodywork. Two separate production lines, where the cranes play a crucial role ensuring efficient material flow during vehicle assembly, provide the flexibility to build vehicles of different types efficiently. Having two cranes in each assembly bay ensures crane availability at all times, avoiding downtime and boosting productivity.

The cranes installed are all single girder, box beam cranes fitted with Street’s advanced ZX series low headroom hoists. Cranes in each bay work independently from a common gantry and so have anti-collision systems installed. Tiger Trailers fabrication work requires general hook service duty and the flexibility to add special lifting beam systems for safe and stable handling of longer and more cumbersome loads. The crane operator can select a position of safety that gives a good view of lifting, moving and load placement by use of a wireless radio remote control. Pendant control is provided as back-up should the need arise.

John Cartwright explained, “We have previous experience of Street cranes and have found that they give reliable performance that is so essential to maintain production momentum. Having two cranes serving each production line gives us greater manufacturing flexibility and ensures that our fitters are not standing around waiting for material or for fabrications to be moved on to the next production stage.”

Street Crane is the UK’s largest crane and hoist manufacturer and offers cranes up to 200 tonnes safe working load, “Our overhead cranes are designed for each application to support client production aims such as lean and just in time manufacturing processes,” explained sales director, Chris Lindley-Smith. “As a local business we are pleased to have worked with a neighbouring manufacturer like Tiger Trailers in supplying the materials handling systems for their new factory and to see this young business establish itself so quickly and successfully.”
