Study finds third of British Expats want to come back to the UK – Elephant Removals responds

Elephant Removals, a top UK provider of domestic and international home moves, have reacted to the release of a study by Experts for Expats which shows that majority of Brit Expats are unhappy.

The report, which comes from Experts for Expats, a company providing online resources, advice and news for British expats, found that more than a third (34.6%) of expats would come back to the UK provided there were no barriers to stop them from doing so.

700 British expats were surveyed and it was revealed that 72% of them were unhappy in the country they currently reside in, demonstrating an apparent gulf in the expectations and realities of living outside of the UK.

Of those who want to come back to the UK, 43% said homesickness was the primary cause whereas 23% said they wanted to come back for a better quality of life. A fifth want to return for financial reasons and 1% say they would like to return to the UK for better career opportunities.

When asked why they had chosen the country they currently reside in, 40% said quality of life, 19% said culture and 13% said financial or career purposes.

The founder of Experts for Expats, Robert Hallums, says people’s expectation of life abroad doesn’t always match the realities: “Whether moving abroad for work or life reasons, too often lack of investigation means that the dream fails to match reality. Circumstances may change, such as the loss of a loved one or failure to meet new friends, and we find that returning home is deemed the only solution.”

Elephant Removals, a company at the forefront of domestic and international removals in the UK, often share their views on news of interest. They say they’ve noticed a definite increase in people returning to the UK.

A representative for the company said: “As a leading provider of domestic and international relocations, we’ve worked with many expats and soon-to-be-expats over the years and we’ve definitely noticed an upturn in the number of people who are opting to come back to the UK in the last year or so.

“However, there’s been no shortage of people leaving the UK either so it’s certainly not a one way street. We’ve helped a number of people to move from the UK to continental Europe in 2014. Whether you’re moving to or from the UK, the team here at Elephant Removals are always ready to help.”
