Fit-for-purpose decking system gives leisure centre terrace new lease of life
Pictured is the new terrace at Grundy Park Leisure Centre
Customers visiting the Grundy Park Leisure Centre in Cheshunt often enjoy a relaxing beverage in its popular café bar where, when the weather permits, they are able to sit outside on a roof terrace. Unfortunately for those occupying the office space beneath the deck, problems of persistent leaks through the old asphalt waterproofing layer were making life rather less pleasant.
The solution to this situation was, however, found when Tremco illbruck delivered a CPD seminar to the firm of consultants involved with a major refurbishment scheme being carried out on the ageing sports centre.
Hertford-based Mace Limited had been appointed to lead the design work on the refurbishment project for which Morgan Sindall is the main contractor. Recognising Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as a key mechanism for construction professionals to keep themselves up to date with best practice, Mace invited Tremco's Local Area Sales Manager to present its one hour seminar on issues affecting the waterproofing of different types of deck areas.
Peter Bitten of tremco illbruck recounts: "As we do for a lot of consultancies, I delivered our CPD seminar entitled "A guide to the specification of cold fluid applied waterproofing" covering elastomeric bonded solutions of which our Repoma Rapid Cure Roofing System is a highly respected brand. Following on from that, Mace put us in touch with contractor, Morgan Sindall, and we involved Cemplas as one of our most experienced approved installers. Essentially, we came up with a technical solution, solving the ongoing problem of leaks through the asphalt while providing a smart finish for a well-used public area, the colour being selected to match the surrounding roofscape."
Following the removal of the seating, planters and other obstructions from the roof deck, Cemplas cleaned and primed the original asphalt surface prior to applying the Repoma Rapid Cure Roofing System. A critical aspect to this contract was that the work was carried out during a period of marginal weather in the spring of 2014, which made the rapid curing characteristics of the treatment particularly important.
