Lancashire-based hog roast catering company, The Pendle Pig,
have thrown their support behind the EU farm commissioners’ goal to make
farming in Europe much simpler than it currently is.
Phil Hogan, the EU farm commissioner, who was appointed in
September of last year, outlined that his first priority in 2015 is
“simplification” of the farming sector. He says he’ll clamp down on red tape
where possible, making running a farm business as easy as it can be for
farmers.
Hogan has argued in front of the European Parliament’s
agriculture and rural development committee that such red tape has the effect
of financially handicapping farmers, playing a substantial role in key business
decisions.
The commissioner said: “Simpler rules will make for greater
competitiveness and will enhance the job-creating potential of agriculture, of
rural areas and of agricultural trade.
“We need to simplify our rules now and cut red tape in an
effective way. We should be pragmatic and flexible in our approach.
Simplification does not come as a ‘big bang’ and will not be achieved at a
given point in time. It should rather consist of a constant flow of smaller and
larger actions aimed at making the lives of farmers and other operators easier.
We should implement these actions wherever it is possible and as soon as it is
possible, to avoid losing precious time for our agricultural sector to become
more competitive and more profitable.”
The promise has been warmly received by farmers and others
connected to the industry. The Pendle Pig, a hog roast catering and machine Hire
Company known for sharing their thoughts on relevant news and research, say a
move towards simplification will allow farmers to focus their energies on
rearing the best produce.
A chef for the company said: “If the EU can succeed in
making farm businesses easier to run then that will go a long way towards
giving pig farmers and others the freedom they need to spend more time and
resources on rearing the very best produce, as opposed to spending time and
money dealing with red tape.
“In turn, caterers like us will be able to take our service
to the next level and provide guests with even better and more affordable
succulent whole roasted pigs. It’s a win-win for everyone involved and we’re
looking forward to what the next few years bring.”
