The Cobra Intervention Vehicle has been put to the test by the Cumbria County Council Fire and Rescue Service, featuring a high pressure hose with the power to break through brick walls. The new tech aims to make firefighting safer, with a team able to take care of the fire from the outside.

The test took place at a controlled fire in Barrow, at the old Thorncliffe School. Infra-red technology was utilised along with the Cobra Intervention Vehicle to highlight and take care of the fire.

The Cobra Intervention Vehicle was created in Sweden, and the hose releases a strong jet of water containing an abrasive cutting substance, allowing the water to break through walls with small puncture sized holes, and a high pressure mist to absorb heat and gases follows, tunnelling through the hole.

Barry Doughty, a cabinet member for the Fire and Rescue Service said, ‘It not only improves safety but because the hole created is so small, no oxygen is admitted to the fire which dramatically boosts the firefighting effect and reduces any potential backdraft.’

The technology will be tested for a further three to four months in the area of Cumbria, and could eventually be the design for future fire engines in the country.
