Leading UK supplier of e-cigarettes, iBreathe, have recently commented on the Oxford English Dictionary’s (OED) decision to have ‘vape’ as the word of the year, due to the increase in how often the word has been used by the public in 2014.

The OED believe that the word ‘vape’ is now thirty times more likely to be used than two years ago, with the figure doubling in 2014, thanks to the rise in e-cigarette usage, which has over 2 million users in the UK vaping. The word was listed in the dictionary, described as ‘to inhale and exhale the vapour produce by an electronic cigarette or similar device.’ The noun for vape, ‘vaping’ has also been included.

Compound nouns using the word ‘vape’ are also on the rise, with an increase use of the words vape pen, vape shop, vape juice, vape fluid and vape lounge being frequently used within and outside e-cigarette social circles. Tobacco cigarettes have been given a retronym to help differentiate the two types of cigarettes also.

The use of the word has been widely used throughout the year, with peak moments being noted when the first vape café opened in Shoreditch called the Vape Lab, and protests in New York City which banned the use of vaping indoors. These incidents have helped the use of the word travel across the globe.
