Ministry of commerce and air guns awareness: Sports Guns respond

Javed Malik, a key member of the LCCI Standing Committee for Pak-India Trade Promotions has urged for the ministry of commerce in the upcoming trade policy, to allow the regulated importation of air pistols and air pellets.  Although the government has allowed the import of air arms , the phrasing of ‘air pistols and air pellets’  cannot be included in the SRO list which causes complications and can lead to unfair penalisations for those wanting to acquire guns  for sporting purposes.

The use of air guns in the UK can be a legal, efficient process – with air pistol shooting especially a growing prospect for economic gain. This was reflected in the 2012 Olympics for example, where the men took bronze in the 10m pistol shoot.

Experts consider that Malik’s comments could be seen as a wider reflection regarding the acceptance and management of controlled air gun sports. It could be seen as beneficial that attitude to air guns is changing, supported by recent US figures. For example, there were a recorded number of 5.4 million women participating in pistol shooting as a sport in 2013, a significant 60% increase from only 3.3 million in 2001. Experts reflect that this shows the common prejudices involved in air gunning as a sport beginning to fall, and that many more people are beginning to enjoy a disciplined, skilled practice.

Sports Guns are regular commentators on such issues and were quick to respond in light of this political news.

“We believe that Mr Malik is raising a very important issue in terms of how air guns are managed and accepted, especially in light of the upcoming General Election” a spokesperson for the company said. “As the Olympics as well as these latest figures have illustrated, air gun shooting is a growing competitive sport.

“However, if limits are placed upon the trade and use of air guns – which of are legal in the UK– this can lead to the production of counterfeits which can be unsafe and lead to complications. We are grateful for Mr Malik’s comments as this raises the crucial issue in terms of air gun management and awareness which is essential for a healthy continuation of the sport. Here is no reason why Britain cannot have a strong team for the 2018 Olympics – we are full of hope.

“However, what is important to keep in mind for safe and efficient regulation of the sport, is that those looking to purchase an air gun or find more information, seek a reliable supplier fully aware of the legal implications. Safe and efficient operation in the industry is something we as a company take as apriority – allowing for the best quality product and accessible prices.”
