
UK Hog Roasting Company, The Pendle Pig, have recently
commented on the news that the UK and US are set to receive further funding for
animal health and disease research, which should improve animals well beings
and the safety of the meat.
The funding comes from five jointly-funded research awards,
which has drawn over £2.3 million from UK funding and $2.3 million from US
funding. The funding is in support of ‘high impact diseases and animal health
issues’ which makes use of the animal health and disease and veterinary immune
reagents programme which is a collaboration between the two countries.
NIFA director, Sonny Ramaswamy said, ‘These grants enable an
international research partnership that looks to control the spread of
pathogens, ensuring we can effectively reduce the health risks and
environmental impacts on foot production worldwide.’
The money for the UK has been provided by the Biotechnology
and Biological Sciences Research Council with the US funding provided by the US
Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
The deputy chief executive of the Biotechnology and
Biological Sciences Research Council, Steve Visscher, said, ‘A growing world
population means that safe and secure food supplies are going to become more
and more important in the years to come. The scale of such challenges require
increased international collaboration, and this partnership of co-investment
between BBSRC and NIFA will allow world-leading researchers in both countries
to work together to combat livestock diseases and safeguard food
supplies.’

it’s the funding that’s been needed for years. The health of live stock is
incredibly important to avoid a crisis, and it should improve the quality of
farming throughout the country, and the US.
